Damien Rice's O is the sound of a heart laid bare in a quiet room, pressed here as a 180-gram double LP UK import.
Released in 2002, the Irish songwriter's debut was a slow-burning, word-of-mouth phenomenon rather than an overnight hit. It paired Rice's hushed, aching voice with acoustic guitar, cello and the luminous harmonies of Lisa Hannigan, whose presence turned many of these songs into fragile, intimate conversations. The arrangements swell and fall away with the emotion, never letting polish get in the way of feeling. There is nothing flashy here, just songs that trust silence as much as sound.
"The Blower's Daughter" became its signature, a song that builds from a whisper to an ache, and its use in the film Closer carried it to a vast new audience. "Volcano" trades lines between Rice and Hannigan over a hypnotic, circling melody, while "Cannonball" proves how much power he could pull from a simple strummed pattern. "Delicate" opens the album with the gentle intensity that defines everything that follows.
Two decades on, O still sounds like a private confession you were never meant to overhear. Spread across two heavyweight records, every breath, creak and quiver comes through, which is exactly how an album this intimate should be heard.
