Forty years on from its 1986 release, Cyndi Lauper's True Colors returns as an expanded 2LP on rainbow sprinkle vinyl, with an unreleased song and a disc of live performances.

Arriving three years after the explosive debut She's So Unusual, True Colors revealed a more reflective Lauper without losing any of her playful streak. She took a hands-on role in the arrangements, with guests including Nile Rodgers and Billy Joel adding color around her unmistakable voice.

The title track remains one of pop's most tender ballads of acceptance, a hushed, slow-building song that has become an anthem far beyond the charts. "Change of Heart" bursts with bright, punchy energy, while her spirited take on "Iko Iko" turns a New Orleans standard into a joyful romp, and a soulful nod to Marvin Gaye shows her range as an interpreter.

This edition adds "The River Cried", a song left in the vault until now, and a second record captured live at Le Zénith in Paris in 1987, where Lauper tears through the album's highlights with her band at full tilt and closes with an a cappella rendition of the title track.

A rainbow-flecked pressing feels like the right fit for a record that made color its whole message, and a fine companion for longtime fans.
