Boy George and the original Culture Club line-up take a victory lap on Live at Wembley World Tour 2016, a limited double LP on blue and pink splatter vinyl.
The reunion that brought George, Roy Hay, Mikey Craig and Jon Moss back together gave the band a chance to revisit the songs that made them one of the defining acts of the early eighties. First released in 2017, this London show catches them in front of a home crowd, with a setlist that leans gladly on the classics.
The hits arrive in force. "Church of the Poisoned Mind" bounces with Motown energy, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" sways with its reggae lilt intact, and a run of early singles glides by on those silky melodies. "Karma Chameleon" turns the arena into one big singalong, exactly as it should.
There are surprises too. George revisits a highlight of his solo years, and the night ends with a stomping run through T. Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)." His voice, deeper and grainier than in the band's heyday, gives the old songs a lived-in warmth.
Pressed in colours as bright as the band's original image, this set is a joyful document of a group back on its feet and clearly enjoying every minute.
