Crowbar have always written heavy music about heavy feelings, and Odd Fellows Rest is where the New Orleans sludge giants let real melody seep into the mire. This reissue spreads the 1998 album across two LPs.
By the late 1990s Kirk Windstein's band had already helped define the slow, crushing sound coming out of Louisiana, the same swampy scene that gave the world Eyehategod and Down. This record kept the tectonic weight of the early albums but pushed the songwriting somewhere more emotional, with choruses that linger long after the last chord rings out.
After a brief intro, "Planets Collide" lands with a lumbering groove that feels genuinely seismic, while "December's Spawn" grinds through cold, downtuned despair. The title track "Odd Fellows Rest" is the album's beating heart, a mournful, slow-burning lament that shows how much feeling Windstein can wring from a single sustained chord. "To Carry the Load" splits the difference between hardcore muscle and doom patience, and Windstein's roar ties it all together.
Plenty of fans rank this among Crowbar's very best, and the case is easy to make. It is bleak, cathartic and strangely uplifting, the sound of a band turning pain into something you can lean on. Spread across a double LP, the album finally gets the room to sprawl its monstrous riffs deserve.
