Courtney Barnett's Creature of Habit is the sound of a Melbourne songwriter starting over in Los Angeles, pressed on 140-gram vinyl in a gatefold jacket.
Her fourth studio album, released in 2026, was written after she moved across the Pacific and wound down her own label, Milk! Records, in 2023. That kind of upheaval runs through these songs, which balance her trademark deadpan observation with something more searching and more vulnerable than before. It is the work of an artist rebuilding her routines, testing which habits are worth keeping.
John Congleton produced and mixed the record, with Barnett and Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa co-producing most of it, and the sound is loose, warm and full of character. "Site Unseen" features Waxahatchee, their voices weaving together beautifully. Opener "Stay in Your Lane" arrives with wry, guitar-driven charm, while "Mostly Patient" captures that very Barnett blend of humour and unease. "Another Beautiful Day" closes the album, and Flea and Floating Points both turn up along the way.
Her lyrics still find poetry in the mundane, turning small moments into quiet revelations.
