Dark, romantic and dripping with gothic atmosphere, Bloodletting is the album that carried Concrete Blonde beyond Los Angeles cult status and onto mainstream radio.
Released in 1990, the band's third album found Johnette Napolitano's smoky, wounded voice at its most commanding, framed by James Mankey's shimmering, effects-laden guitar. It balanced alternative rock bite with something more cinematic and haunted, landing right as college radio was crossing into the mainstream. The songs move between punchy, radio-ready rock and slow, smoldering ballads, and the sequencing gives each mood room to land.
The title track, "Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)," is a swaggering slab of bloodthirsty glamour, while "Caroline" and "Days and Days" show off the band's gift for brooding, slow-burning melody. "Joey," a raw plea to a lover lost to the bottle, became their biggest hit, an aching ballad that still stops listeners in their tracks decades later.
Napolitano writes like a poet with a switchblade, and the arrangements leave her plenty of room to rage, whisper and mourn, sometimes within a single verse.
It remains a cornerstone of late-night alternative listening, equally at home beside goth classics and smoky torch songs, and a natural fit for everyone who has ever found comfort in a sad song played loud.
