A Cody Johnson Christmas brings the Texas country star's big, warm voice to the holidays on his first Christmas album, released in 2021 and spread across two LPs.
Johnson and producer Trent Willmon built the ten-song project around family favourites, giving classic carols newly imagined arrangements and adding two originals penned by Willmon. It feels personal from the start, the sound of an artist sharing songs tied to his own family's memories of the season.
"Hat Made of Mistletoe", one of the new originals, brings a playful wink, while Willie Nelson's "Pretty Paper" gets a gentle, unhurried reading. "Silent Night" becomes a family affair with his wife Brandi and daughters Clara and Cori joining in, and "Feliz Navidad" turns into a Texas party with Kevin Fowler and Roger Creager.
Across both discs he keeps one foot firmly in tradition, letting the melodies breathe and his voice do the heavy lifting rather than piling on holiday gloss. The new songs sit comfortably beside the standards, as if they had always been part of the canon.
It is a heartfelt, unpretentious seasonal record, made for decorating the tree or a long drive home for the holidays, and a natural fit for any country fan's December rotation.
