Cocteau Twins' Treasure is dream pop at its most opulent, the 1984 album where Elizabeth Fraser's voice stopped needing words to break your heart.

This was the Scottish group's third album for 4AD and the first with Simon Raymonde on bass, completing the classic trio alongside Fraser and guitarist Robin Guthrie. The band produced it themselves, and the result sounded like nothing else around at the time, a record that seemed to arrive from some gilded, half-remembered other world.

Every song carries a name, from Ivo and Lorelei to Persephone and Pandora (For Cindy), and each one feels like a different room in the same candlelit palace. Guthrie's guitars shimmer and cascade through deep pools of reverb over crisp drum machine patterns, while Fraser's vocals swoop, flutter and stack into a language entirely her own. Lorelei is the dazzling, glassy centrepiece, and Persephone bristles with a darker, more forceful edge.

Its fingerprints are all over shoegaze, ethereal wave and modern dream pop, yet nothing that followed has quite matched its strange, ornate beauty. On vinyl, those layers of guitar and voice open up with real depth, the kind of record you put on to make an ordinary evening feel quietly enchanted, again and again.
