Cloud Nothings trade indie rock for something far heavier on What Kind of Hell Did You Survive?, pressed on white vinyl splattered with blue, yellow and red.
After 2024's Final Summer, Dylan Baldi and the band felt pigeonholed by the indie tag and set out to honour the heavy rock they had been living on, from Queens of the Stone Age and Motörhead to Earth and Electric Wizard. Seth Manchester, known for his work with Battles and Lightning Bolt, produced the record.
Lead single "Death Keeps Me Alive" is sung from the point of view of an evil power that feeds on death, war and hate, and it sounds like a band with no interest in repeating itself. "World Destroyer" opens the album with intent, while "Terror Multiplies" and closer "This World Is Shit" leave little doubt about the mood.
The lyrics take on cruel governments, community and a deep frustration with the state of things, borrowing the political edge of metal and hardcore and filtering it through Baldi's knack for a sharp, memorable hook.
Nine tracks, no wasted motion. For a band that built its name on wiry indie punk, this is a bold left turn, and the splatter pressing looks every bit as loud as the record sounds.
