Howard Shore's music for The Lord of the Rings gets a sweeping concert-hall treatment on this 3LP set from The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

Performed with the Crouch End Festival Chorus under conductor Nic Raine, these recordings first appeared in 2004, condensing the scores for all three Peter Jackson films into one continuous listen. This is not the original film soundtrack but a faithful re-recording, the kind that lets the themes stand on their own, away from the battle scenes and the dialogue.

The first sides open in the Shire with "Concerning Hobbits" and its lilting, Celtic-tinged melody, before "The Bridge of Khazad Dum" unleashes thundering percussion and a choir that seems to shake the room. "Evenstar" offers a moment of fragile beauty, and the battle music of the later films builds to the full force of brass and chorus. The final side gathers vocal versions of three of the songs, including "Into the West," sung by Helen Hobson.

Spread over six sides, the music has the pacing of a long winter evening with the books open.

Tolkien fans get a generous way to revisit the whole saga without queuing up all three films, from the green hills of the Shire to the final voyage west.
