Fourteen songs in roughly fifteen minutes: Group Sex is the 1980 debut that made Circle Jerks Los Angeles hardcore royalty, back here in a 40th anniversary edition.
Singer Keith Morris had just walked away from Black Flag, and he teamed up with guitarist Greg Hetson, bassist Roger Rogerson and drummer Lucky Lehrer to make something even faster and funnier. They cut the album at Byrdcliffe Studios in Culver City for Frontier Records, co-producing with Cary Markoff, and its blink-and-you-miss-it running time became part of the legend.
"Deny Everything" is over in under thirty seconds, a perfect statement of intent. "Beverly Hills" sneers at the rich kids up the road, "Live Fast Die Young" turns teenage nihilism into a shout-along anthem, and the title track borrows a song by Jeffrey Lee Pierce of The Gun Club, played at breakneck speed.
Lehrer's drumming is the secret weapon, impossibly quick yet loose enough to swing, while Morris sounds gleefully unhinged, spitting sarcasm at authority and suburban boredom alike.
Four decades on, this remains one of the defining records of American hardcore, short enough to play twice in a row and sharp enough that you'll want to. Two of the songs even carry Greg Ginn co-writes, a nod to Morris's old band.
