Golden Shower of Hits is the 1983 album where Circle Jerks proved Los Angeles hardcore could be savage and very funny at once, back here on clear yellow vinyl.
Led by former Black Flag singer Keith Morris and guitarist Greg Hetson, with Roger Rogerson on bass and John Ingram on drums, the band's third album is a lean, furious blast that clocks in under half an hour. Producer Jerry Goldstein, who ran the LAX label that released it, kept the sound raw and immediate, with Morris snarling every line through a sneer that never loses its sense of humor.
"Coup D'Etat" and "When the Shit Hits the Fan" both found a second life through Alex Cox's cult film Repo Man, while "In Your Eyes" opens the record in a flash. Then there is the title track "Golden Shower of Hits (Jerks on 45)", a parody of the Stars on 45 medley craze that strings together six soft-rock and pop covers, including "Along Comes Mary" and "Afternoon Delight", into a gleefully twisted tale of love, pregnancy, marriage and divorce.
It is that blend of fury and mischief that keeps the record so beloved among punk fans.
On clear yellow vinyl, this reissue is a loud reminder of why the Circle Jerks remain essential listening for anyone raised on fast, snotty hardcore.
