All The King's Men sees CHVRCHES trade some of their synths for guitars, and the Glasgow trio sound energised by the change. It is their first album since Screen Violence in 2021.

After touring that record, Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty stepped back and agreed that whatever came next had to challenge and excite them. Instead of working apart, they wrote together in the same room, in intensive three-week stretches back in Glasgow, and the result is a proudly British record that wears its roots openly.

The reference points tell the story: the kitchen-sink cinema of Shane Meadows and Ken Loach, the brooding pulse of Massive Attack, the bite of Siouxsie and the Banshees and PJ Harvey, and the folk guitar lineage of Nick Drake and Bert Jansch. Mayberry leans into storytelling and stretches her range, while the band swap some of their glossy synth-pop sheen for indie rock muscle.

Roses led the way as the first single, with Overthinker close behind, and the eleven songs run through to Jamie's Prayer and the closing Faith In Flying.

For long-time fans it is a fascinating turn, and for anyone who always suspected a great rock band was hiding inside CHVRCHES, this LP makes the case loud and clear.
