The Touch Of Your Lips finds Chet Baker in 1979 with no drummer and nothing to hide behind, just guitar, bass and that fragile, burnished trumpet.
Recorded that year for the Danish label SteepleChase and produced by Nils Winther, it teams Baker with guitarist Doug Raney and the virtuoso bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. By then Baker was based largely in Europe, recording prolifically for small labels that let him play the standards he loved in intimate settings, and few of those dates are as quietly lovely as this one.
The drummerless trio gives everything a floating, conversational feel. "I Waited For You" opens in a soft-focus hush, "But Not For Me" picks up a gentle lilt, and "Autumn In New York" is pure late-night melancholy. Raney's clean, unhurried lines weave around the trumpet, while Ørsted Pedersen supplies a pulse so strong you never miss the drums. "Star Eyes" closes on a buoyant note, all three players finishing each other's phrases.
It is chamber jazz in the truest sense, warm and beautifully balanced.
For late-period Baker, this sits near the top of the pile, a record to put on when the lights are low and the evening has nowhere else to be.
