Chet Baker's Swimming by Moonlight arrives as a deluxe 180 gram double LP in a gatefold jacket, bringing previously unreleased recordings from the trumpeter's final years into the light.

The music was recorded in 1986 and 1987 while Baker worked with photographer and filmmaker Bruce Weber on Let's Get Lost, the Oscar-nominated documentary that followed the jazz icon near the end of his life. The tapes sat in Weber's archive for decades before he curated this collection, released in 2025 with longtime Baker collaborator John Leftwich producing.

The first two sides come from studio sessions in Hollywood and Paris, where Baker's fragile, unhurried voice drifts over Make Me Rainbows and a delicate Haunted Heart, his trumpet answering in soft, rounded phrases. Sides three and four move to a live set in Cannes, with the band stretching out on Milestones before Almost Blue closes things in a hush so quiet it feels almost private. Spoken moments and a recited poem add to the sense of sitting in the room with him.

It is a bittersweet listen, the sound of a musician whose tone only grew more intimate with age. Pressed for keeps, this set adds a moving final chapter to one of jazz's most haunting stories.
