Chet Baker sounds relaxed and wonderfully unhurried on No Problem, a 1979 quartet date for the Danish SteepleChase label built entirely on the tunes of pianist Duke Jordan.
By the late 1970s Baker was spending much of his life in Europe, recording prolifically for small labels that let him play exactly what he wanted. Here he shares the spotlight with Jordan, the bebop veteran best remembered for his work alongside Charlie Parker, plus the formidable Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Norman Fearrington. The session was recorded in 1979 and released the following year.
The title track stretches out for nearly ten minutes, Baker's tone soft and burnished while Jordan comps with gentle, swinging authority. "Sultry Eve" lives up to its name with a slow, smoky glow, and "Kiss of Spain" and "My Queen Is Home to Stay" show off Jordan's gift for warm, singable melodies that suit Baker's lyrical style down to the ground. Nobody hurries and nobody shows off, which is exactly the point.
Pedersen's agile bass lines keep everything moving, and the whole band sounds like it is listening closely to every phrase. For fans of Baker's later, more introspective period, this is a gentle and deeply rewarding late-night record.
