Chet Baker's Mr. B is a hushed, late-career gem from a 1983 trio session in the Netherlands, pressed here on limited silver vinyl at 180 grams.

By the early 1980s Baker was living largely in Europe, and some of his most affecting playing from that period came in small, drummerless settings like this one. Pianist Michel Graillier and bassist Riccardo Del Fra give him a soft, open frame, and the absence of drums leaves every breath and phrase exposed. First issued in 1984 by a Dutch jazz label, the album has long been treasured by admirers of his later work.

The repertoire leans on sophisticated modern jazz writing. Herbie Hancock's Dolphin Dance floats on Graillier's shimmering chords, Baker's trumpet unhurried and lyrical above them. Horace Silver's Strollin' has a relaxed, easy lope, while Dave Brubeck's In Your Own Sweet Way becomes a quiet conversation between three musicians listening closely to one another. Sam Rivers' Beatrice is pure tenderness, perfectly suited to Baker's fragile, burnished tone.

Two bonus tracks round out the second side, extending the session's gentle late-night spell. This is music for the small hours, intimate and wistful, and the silver pressing adds a little shine to one of Baker's most quietly beautiful records from his final decade.
