Chet Is Back! catches Chet Baker reclaiming his horn in 1962, presented here on limited 180-gram orange vinyl.

Recorded in Rome after a spell in an Italian prison, the album finds him fronting a sextet of rising European players: Bobby Jaspar on tenor sax, René Thomas on guitar, Amedeo Tommasi on piano, Benoît Quersin on bass and Daniel Humair on drums. There are no vocals this time, just Baker's trumpet at its most lyrical, set against a band that pushes him toward harder, more muscular bop than his fans might expect.

Thelonious Monk's "Well, You Needn't" opens with a confident, angular swing, and Charlie Parker's "Barbados" shows how comfortably he could still run the fastest changes. Sonny Rollins' "Pent-Up House" crackles with energy, while Tommasi's own "Ballata in Forma di Blues" slows things to a moody, late-night simmer. René Thomas is a revelation throughout, his guitar lines clean, warm and endlessly inventive, and Humair keeps the whole band light on its feet.

Often overshadowed by his West Coast albums of the 1950s, this stands among Baker's strongest instrumental records. The orange pressing makes it an easy one to spot in the crates, and the music rewards every return visit with something new.
