Samh Almea'ad is a lost piece of Libyan pop history, dug out of a box of unmarked cassettes and reissued on 7-inch by Habibi Funk, the Berlin label that keeps finding these things right before they vanish for good.

Cheb Bakr cut this in early 2000s Benghazi at Jamaica Studios with producer and collaborator Ahmed Ben Ali, and the record sounds like exactly what that studio name implies, R&B and hip hop beats colliding with touches of jungle and drum and bass, a genuinely global sound assembled from a city most record collectors never think to look toward. Habibi Funk only found it because Yousef Alhoush, son of Libyan musician Najib Alhoush, handed over boxes of his father's old cassette tapes, and the label spent three days in a Cairo hotel room digitizing nearly a hundred of them before this track surfaced.

Samh Almea'ad rides Bakr's vocal with real effortlessness over a beat that refuses to sit still, R&B smoothness colliding with breakbeat urgency in a way that shouldn't cohere and somehow does completely. Rjana Lamta fills the B-side with the same cross-continental energy, Benghazi and New York bleeding into each other without either side losing its identity.

Two songs, one nearly lost archive, and a reminder that the early 2000s produced far stranger, better records than the ones that actually made it out at the time.
