Cheap Trick's Dream Police is power pop with a widescreen budget, and this limited red 180 gram pressing from Holland arrives in a gatefold jacket worthy of the drama.

Recorded at the Record Plant in Los Angeles with producer Tom Werman, the band's fourth studio album was finished well before it came out. Then Cheap Trick at Budokan unexpectedly exploded, and the label held this one back until 1979 so the live record could run its course. When it finally landed, fans heard a band reaching for longer songs, bigger arrangements and orchestral color without losing its gift for a hook.

The title track kicks things off, a paranoid, string-swept rocker with Robin Zander playing a man convinced the cops are inside his head. "Voices" is one of Rick Nielsen's sweetest melodies, a lovelorn ballad built on chiming guitars and stacked harmonies, while "I'll Be with You Tonight" bounces on pure Beatles-meets-Midwest energy. Side two's "Gonna Raise Hell" is a nine-minute marathon of pounding riffs and swirling strings that sneaks a quick quote of "Heaven Tonight" in near its close.

It catches Cheap Trick at the peak of their late-seventies powers, swinging for the rafters and a little unhinged. The red vinyl seems only fitting for a record about being arrested by your own imagination.
