Cheap Trick handed the controls to George Martin for All Shook Up, their 1980 album, reissued here on limited 180-gram magenta vinyl imported from Holland.

Fresh off the live triumph of At Budokan and the polished pop of Dream Police, the Rockford quartet wanted to get weird, and they found an unlikely accomplice in the producer best known for his work with The Beatles. Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Bun E. Carlos responded with their most adventurous and least predictable record, a set that trades easy hooks for crunch, eccentricity and studio experimentation.

Opener Stop This Game pairs big harmonies with brooding drama, and Baby Loves to Rock and World's Greatest Lover show off Zander's range, from snarl to croon. Go for the Throat (Use Your Own Imagination) is pure Nielsen mischief, full of wiseguy attitude, and the whole album crackles with the tension of a band pushing against its own reputation. Martin's touch is everywhere, in the sly arrangements and the sheer variety of textures.

Long overshadowed by the hits that surrounded it, All Shook Up has become a cult favourite among fans who prefer their power pop with a few loose wires. This colourful pressing makes a strong case for its rehabilitation, and it looks terrific spinning too.
