Charli XCX's True Romance returns as a 140-gram vinyl reissue, bringing back the 2013 debut that first sketched the shadowy, glittering pop she has been sharpening ever since.

Long before Brat turned her into a household name, Charli was building a cult following with songs that paired gothic melodrama with chart-sized hooks. True Romance gathered singles she had been releasing since 2011 into one moody, cohesive record, and its blend of club textures and heartbroken diary entries still sounds current.

Much of the album was built with producer Ariel Rechtshaid, whose hazy synths and booming drums give "Nuclear Seasons" its cold, cinematic pull. "You (Ha Ha Ha)" flips a Gold Panda sample into a sneering kiss-off, while "Stay Away" floats on a fog of reverb and longing. Then "What I Like" snaps everything into bright, bratty focus, an early glimpse of the fearless pop star waiting around the corner.

What makes the record rewarding now is hearing those ideas arrive raw, from the deadpan humour to choruses that feel slightly unhinged in the best way. The songs swing from icy synth-pop to swooning balladry without losing her voice for a second.

For anyone who found Charli through her later run, this is the origin story, and it holds up as a strange, romantic pop record in its own right.
