With Sucker, Charli XCX swapped polite pop for punk attitude and buzzing guitars, and this 140 gram reissue brings her loudest, rowdiest record back to the turntable.

Released in 2014, her second studio album arrived riding the success of Boom Clap, the bright, swooning single from The Fault in Our Stars soundtrack that introduced her to a much wider audience. Rather than chase that sweetness for a whole record, Charli went snotty and fast, leaning into garage-rock riffs and shouted hooks with a cheerful disregard for good manners.

The title track Sucker opens the album with a gleeful sneer at anyone who ever doubted her, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. Break the Rules is a shout-along anthem for skipping class and staying out far too late, while Doing It, with Rita Ora, adds a glossy synth-pop strut. Boom Clap still sounds like pure, heart-on-sleeve joy, a reminder that she could write a classic chorus in her sleep.

Sucker sits at a fascinating crossroads in Charli's catalogue, the last full album before she swerved into the experimental work of Vroom Vroom and Pop 2. Hearing it now, the attitude that would define her later eras is already fully formed, and it is turned up very loud indeed.
