Charley Crockett's Visions of Dallas is the second chapter of his $10 Cowboy story, a 2024 set of honky-tonk and Texas soul that feels lived in from the very first note.
These songs were originally meant to sit alongside $10 Cowboy as a double album, but they ended up split into two records released the same year. Crockett produced this one with longtime collaborator Billy Horton at Arlyn Studios in Austin, and it closed out his run on his own Son of Davy imprint before a move to a major label.
Where its sibling leaned on originals, this record splits the difference between new songs and deep-cut covers. The title track "Visions of Dallas," co-written with Taylor Grace, sets a wistful, lonesome tone, and "Killers of the Flower Moon," written with T Bone Burnett, stands among his most striking originals. Crockett also tips his hat to his heroes, turning in a loose, easy-rolling take on Hoyt Axton's "Trouble and Misery" and a tender reading of Townes Van Zandt's "Loretta."
Throughout, his smoky, unhurried voice sits warm and close in the mix, backed by a band that knows exactly when to lay back.
It is a record for dusty boots and late nights, from one of country music's most prolific and stubbornly old-school voices.
