Mingus Dynasty followed hot on the heels of Mingus Ah Um, and the 1960 Columbia album finds Charles Mingus in peak creative form, presented here as a Spanish import.

Recorded in November 1959 at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York with producer Teo Macero, it caught the bassist and bandleader at the end of a remarkable year. His core group, with Booker Ervin and John Handy on saxophones, Jimmy Knepper on trombone and Dannie Richmond on drums, is expanded on several tracks with guests like Benny Golson, Don Ellis and vibraphonist Teddy Charles, giving Mingus a broader palette to paint with.

"Slop" opens the album with a loose, bluesy swagger that sounds like a party threatening to get out of hand. "Song With Orange" shifts moods with sly wit, and "Gunslinging Bird" is a fiery salute to Charlie Parker whose full title is a pointed joke about his imitators. Mingus's love for Duke Ellington shines through too, with a lush, slow take on "Mood Indigo" that puts his own bass right at the heart of it.

The album balances composition and spontaneity in a way only Mingus could manage, rowdy one moment and tender the next.
