Unison is where Céline Dion first sang to the English-speaking world, a polished 1990 debut that set the stage for everything after. This Canadian import is pressed on white vinyl.
She was already a star in Quebec and France, with a long run of French-language albums behind her, when she made this crossover. The budget grew to bring in heavyweight producers, among them David Foster, Christopher Neil and Andy Goldmark, and sessions ran across London, New York and Los Angeles. The gamble worked, and the album went multi-platinum at home in Canada.
Where Does My Heart Beat Now became her first big American hit, climbing into the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 on a soaring, dramatic chorus. (If There Was) Any Other Way opens the album with bright pop energy, the title track glides on sleek synths, and The Last to Know shows the controlled, aching side of a voice that was only getting bigger.
The production is pure early-nineties gloss, shiny keyboards and big drums, but it never buries the singer at its centre.
Hearing it now is like watching the opening scene of a superstar's story. For fans, it is the essential first chapter of her English-language career.
