Chan Marshall's first album of original songs since Moon Pix, You Are Free arrived in 2003 and remains one of Cat Power's most intimate and quietly powerful records. This LP includes an MP3 download.
Marshall produced the album herself, with Adam Kasper engineering and mixing, and she gathered an unexpected cast of friends along the way. Dave Grohl plays drums on several tracks, Eddie Vedder adds his voice to two songs, and Warren Ellis of the Dirty Three brings violin to one of the album's highlights. Yet the star is always Marshall's voice, smoky and conversational, drifting between piano and guitar with a hush that pulls you close.
He War is the closest thing to a rock song here, driven by Grohl's drumming and a nervy guitar line. Good Woman, with Vedder's harmonies, strings and Ellis's violin, is a heartbreaking farewell sung with real grace. Werewolf, a cover of Michael Hurley's eerie folk song, is wrapped in haunting strings, and her take on John Lee Hooker's Keep On Runnin' shows her deep roots in the blues.
The rest of the album moves through bare piano ballads and restless sketches, each one emotionally candid.
For fans of hushed, honest songwriting, You Are Free is a cornerstone of early-2000s indie and still sounds remarkable.
