Up In Flames is Dan Snaith's 2003 psychedelic pile-up of drums, horns and harmonies, returning to vinyl under the Caribou name.

It first appeared under his earlier alias Manitoba, his second album and the last he released under that name before becoming Caribou. Snaith produced it himself, and where his debut leaned on delicate electronic textures, Up In Flames throws open the windows, layering live drums, chimes and swooning vocals into dense, sunlit collages that owe as much to 1960s pop as to the laptop. It remains one of the most joyful records in his catalogue.

Opener "I've Lived on a Dirt Road All My Life" eases in gently on layered percussion and blurred melody. Singles "Hendrix With Ko" and "Jacknuggeted" pile drums, horns and hazy vocals on top of one another until the songs nearly topple, and the nearly eight-minute closer, "Every Time She Turns Round It's Her Birthday", stretches into a hypnotic, slow-building finale.

Ten tracks in just under 40 minutes, and the record rarely sits still for long. For fans who came to Caribou through his later dance-leaning albums, this is a vivid look at where his gift for euphoric, layered sound took root, and it deserves to be played loud.
