Carcass's 1988 debut Reek of Putrefaction is one of extreme metal's great foundation stones, the record that kicked open the door for goregrind.
The Liverpool trio of Bill Steer, Jeff Walker and Ken Owen tracked it in just four days at Rich Bitch Studios in Birmingham, and the band themselves were never happy with the murky result. Plenty of listeners in the tape-trading underground disagreed. It reached number 6 on the UK Indie Chart, and John Peel declared it his favorite album of the year, an endorsement that made the underground sit up and take notice.
Twenty-two tracks fly past in a blur of blast beats, downtuned riffs and gurgling, layered vocals, with lyrics lifted straight from the pages of a pathology textbook. "Genital Grinder" sets the pace, "Maggot Colony" and "Festerday" pile on the grime, and "Pyosisified (Rotten to the Gore)" proves the band's gallows humor was there from the very start. The bass frequencies ran so low that the original vinyl had to be cut at a reduced volume.
This is where the road to Necroticism and Heartwork begins, a scrappy, filthy and fiercely influential document of a band inventing a genre in real time. Approach with a strong stomach and the volume up.
