Ten years after Teens of Denial made Car Seat Headrest indie rock's most articulate misfits, Will Toledo revisits it as Teen of Denial: Joe's Story, a reimagined 2LP set.

Toledo often used the name Joe as a stand-in on the original record, a sly nod to Daniel Johnston, and as the album's tenth birthday approached he decided the character deserved a proper backstory. So the band went back into the studio with Steve Fisk, who produced the 2016 original, tweaking lyrics, reworking arrangements and recording brand new songs to fill in the gaps. Toledo has framed the result as closer to the album Teens of Denial was always meant to be.

Familiar landmarks remain, with Vincent and Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales returning in reworked form, still full of nervy sprawl and late-night ache. New songs such as Optimistic Son and Joe Drives Again push the story forward, turning a portrait of adolescent self-loathing into a fuller arc with room for consequences and growth.

The bleakness and wry cynicism that made the original a cult favourite are intact, but there's some hard-won compassion in the mix now. For anyone who spent 2016 shouting along to these songs, this double vinyl edition is a fascinating and oddly moving reunion with an old friend who has finally learned to talk about it.
