Caamp's Boys catches the Ohio folk-rockers in their scrappy, sun-dappled early days, spread here across two LPs.

Taylor Meier and Evan Westfall met at summer camp as kids and went on to form Caamp in Upper Arlington, just outside Columbus, building a devoted following on banjo, acoustic guitar and Meier's weathered, whiskey-rough voice. Released in 2018 in two halves, Side A and Side B, Boys arrived just before the band's signing with Mom + Pop and the wider success of By and By, and it catches them on the cusp of something bigger.

The songs are simple in the best way, all campfire melodies, easy harmonies and lyrics about friendship, wanderlust and young love. Going to the Country rolls along with back-porch charm, and 26, released as a single ahead of the record, wears its heart firmly on its sleeve. Strawberries and Books show off Meier's knack for small, tender details, the kind that sneak up on you on the third or fourth listen.

Across twelve songs the band keep things warm and unhurried, letting the banjo ring and the choruses swell. For fans who found Caamp through their later records, Boys is a lovely look at where the magic started, and it plays like a long, lazy afternoon with old friends.
