C418's Minecraft - Volume Alpha turned the music of a block-building game into something people play purely for pleasure, here on transparent green vinyl.

Daniel Rosenfeld, the German producer behind the C418 name, composed these pieces during Minecraft's early days, and the album first appeared in 2011. This single LP gathers a dozen of its best-loved selections. For a generation of players, the music became the sound of sunrise over pixelated hills and of long, quiet evenings spent building something alone.

What makes it work is restraint. Soft piano, warm synth pads and generous pockets of silence do most of the talking, and nothing ever rushes. "Sweden" is the one everybody knows, a slow, glowing melody that somehow feels like missing a place you have never actually been. "Wet Hands" drifts along on a simple, rippling piano figure, while "Subwoofer Lullaby" earns its name with a deep, gentle pulse.

"Mice on Venus" might be the quiet heart of the set, a wistful tune with a gently tumbling melody that lingers long after the needle lifts.

Away from the game, these short compositions hold up beautifully as ambient listening for reading or winding down at the end of the day. The green vinyl is a fitting nod to the grass blocks where it all began.
