Lost for nearly three decades, After the Astronaut finally lands: the Butthole Surfers album that was meant to follow Electriclarryland in 1998, released at last in its original form.
By the late nineties the Texas band's relationship with Capitol Records had grown increasingly strained, and they had split acrimoniously with their manager. The record was shelved, and once the dust settled the band re-recorded most of its songs for Weird Revolution in 2001. This 2026 release, produced by guitarist Paul Leary, finally lets fans hear the album as it was first imagined, a fascinating snapshot of a band in transition.
Opener "Weird Revolution" sets the tone with sly, warped confidence, and "Intelligent Guy (Astronaut Version)" offers a different take on a song fans know from the later album. "Jet Fighter" crackles with nervy energy, while "The Last Astronaut" floats out into stranger, spacier territory. Closer "Turkey and Dressing" is as gleefully odd as its title suggests.
Gibby Haynes's unhinged vocals, Leary's mangled guitar and King Coffey's drumming are all here, folded into the beats and studio experiments the band were chasing at the time.
For anyone who loves their rock weird, this is a missing chapter of the Butthole Surfers story, finally on the shelf.
