Buju Banton's Inna Heights is a soulful, roots-minded high point from one of dancehall's most commanding voices.
Released in 1997, his fifth studio album followed the spiritual turn of 'Til Shiloh and pushed even further toward conscious reggae, with producer Donovan Germain framing Buju's gruff, expressive voice in warm, live-feeling rhythms. It topped Billboard's Reggae Albums chart and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album, confirming his move from fiery young deejay to fully fledged singer. The production leaves plenty of room for his voice, with crisp one-drop drums, rich bass and gentle keyboard textures throughout.
"Destiny" is the album's rallying cry, an uplifting statement of purpose, and "Hills and Valleys" carries a quiet devotional strength. Beres Hammond lends his honeyed voice to "My Woman Now", and Toots Hibbert joins for "54/46", a nod to the Maytals classic. Short "Inter Lingua" interludes thread the record together, giving it the flow of a complete statement rather than a singles collection.
Rich in harmonies, horns and hard-won wisdom, Inna Heights captures Buju at the peak of his powers as a vocalist. It stands as a cornerstone of late-1990s reggae and belongs next to 'Til Shiloh in any serious collection, a record that still rewards a full front-to-back spin.
