Blues Singer finds Buddy Guy setting aside the electric fury for the acoustic country blues of his heroes, presented here as a limited red 180-gram 2LP in a gatefold sleeve.

Released in 2003 and produced by Dennis Herring at Sweet Tea studio in Oxford, Mississippi, the album strips everything back to guitars, upright bass and Jim Keltner's understated drums. Guy chose songs from the masters who shaped him, including Skip James, Son House and John Lee Hooker, and sang them with the authority of a man who had lived alongside that tradition. The record won the Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album.

"Hard Time Killing Floor" opens with Skip James's haunted Depression-era lament, Guy's voice raw and close to the microphone. "Crawlin' Kingsnake" brings in Eric Clapton and B.B. King on lead guitar, a relaxed and generous meeting of three giants. "Louise McGhee" digs deep into Son House territory, and "Lonesome Home Blues" closes the set on a mournful, lingering note.

Without amplifiers to hide behind, every bend and every breath matters, and Guy sounds completely at home in the quiet of a small room.

For fans who know him for his fireworks, this is a moving portrait of the roots underneath them all.
