Wrecking Ball is Bruce Springsteen at his angriest and most hopeful, a 2012 broadside against economic injustice spread across two LPs.

Written in the shadow of the financial crisis, the album points a finger at Wall Street greed and the hollowing out of working towns. Springsteen and producer Ron Aniello pulled in Irish folk, gospel choirs, loops and even a rap verse, giving the protest a fresh, widescreen sound. It also became a farewell of sorts, featuring some of Clarence Clemons' final recordings before his death in 2011.

"We Take Care of Our Own" opens with stadium-sized chime and a bitter twist, its chorus far more pointed than it first sounds. "Death to My Hometown" is a stomping, Irish-flavoured rebel song with a fist raised high, while "Jack of All Trades" broods over piano and horns before Tom Morello's guitar tears through the closing minutes.

The emotional peak is "Land of Hope and Dreams", a long-time concert favourite finally given a proper studio home, where Clemons' saxophone solo lands like a blessing from an old friend.

It stands among the most vital records of Springsteen's later career, a set of songs that sound built for the arena yet hit hardest late at night with the lyric sheet in your hands.
