Pressed on tangerine orange vinyl, The People's Key is Bright Eyes at their most cosmic, the 2011 album that closed a long chapter for Conor Oberst's band.

After years of folk confessionals and country detours, Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott steered the project toward synthesizers, big guitars and strange spiritual questions. Mogis produced the sessions at ARC Studios in Omaha, and the record is threaded with the rambling, mystical spoken passages of Denny Brewer from the band Refried Ice Cream, his musings drifting in and out like a late-night radio broadcast from somewhere very far away.

Firewall opens slowly, building from a murmur into a hypnotic seven-minute slow burn. Shell Games is a bright, piano-driven rush and one of the catchiest songs in the band's catalogue, while Jejune Stars barrels ahead on chugging guitars and restless energy. One for You, One for Me closes the album on a gentle, repeating mantra that lingers long after the needle lifts, an unexpectedly hopeful ending to a record full of big questions.

Divisive on release and richer with every year since, The People's Key rewards listeners who like their indie rock with a side of metaphysics. The orange wax suits its sci-fi glow perfectly, and it makes a striking addition to any Bright Eyes shelf.
