Noise Floor (Rarities: 1998-2005) gathers the scattered corners of Bright Eyes' early years onto two LPs, pressed here in a champagne wave colorway.
Before Conor Oberst became one of indie rock's most scrutinized songwriters, he was releasing music at a startling pace: split singles, compilation tracks, 7-inches and one-off collaborations. By 2006, much of it had become hard to find, so Saddle Creek pulled the best of those stray recordings into one collection. It plays less like a grab bag than an alternate history of the band's rise from Omaha to national attention.
Soon You Will Be Leaving Your Man is one of the most devastating things Oberst wrote in that era, a slow-building, five-minute heartbreak. Motion Sickness shows off his knack for turning anxiety into something close to an anthem, while a fragile cover of Daniel Johnston's Devil Town proves how well he could inhabit someone else's despair. Two songs cut with M. Ward add a warm, neighborly glow, and the set moves easily between bedroom intimacy and full-band urgency.
For fans who already know Lifted or I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning by heart, this is where the deeper story lives. The shimmering vinyl makes it feel like the hidden treasure it is, and it's a fine way to hear how a cult hero found his voice.
