Lesser Man is where Boy Harsher began, the home-recorded debut EP from Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller, all cold synths, slow pulses and smouldering desire.
The duo formed in Savannah, Georgia, before settling in Northampton, Massachusetts, and first put these songs out on cassette in 2014. This edition comes from the remastered reissue on their own Nude Club label, which added the track "Run" to the original set, and it arrives on vinyl with a download card included.
"Pain" is the centrepiece, more than seven minutes of icy drum machines, throbbing bass and Matthews's breathy, half-spoken vocal circling ever closer. "Lust" opens the record in a low, seductive crawl, while "Modulations" lets Muller's synth lines pulse and warp like headlights through fog on a rainy night.
The sound draws on darkwave, minimal synth and the moodier corners of eighties club music, but there's a raw, romantic edge that is entirely their own. It's dance music for empty warehouses at three in the morning, sensual and a little menacing, built on repetition that slowly pulls you under.
For fans who came in with Careful or Yr Body Is Nothing, this is the blueprint, and it still sounds startlingly fully formed for a first release made at home.
