Bonobo widens the frame again on Distance in Static, his eighth studio album, spread across two 140 gram discs with a digital download card tucked inside.
Released in 2026 on Ninja Tune, the record finds Simon Green gathering one of his most varied casts of voices, including Arooj Aftab, Joy Crookes, Nilüfer Yanya, Ichiko Aoba, Nicole Miglis of Hundred Waters and Aanya Martin. Lyrics arrive in English, Urdu and Japanese, and Green weaves historic Iranian samples and guzheng recordings into his production. He has hinted that this may be the last time he makes an album in quite this form, which gives the whole thing a reflective, end-of-chapter glow.
Lead single "Me and You" arrived first, followed by a double release pairing "Drift" with "Fire on the Water", which carries Arooj Aftab's unmistakable voice. Elsewhere, "Cycles" and its neighbours show Green's knack for letting small details accumulate into something quietly euphoric, the kind of slow bloom Bonobo has always done better than almost anyone, with global textures folded in so naturally they never feel like decoration.
It is a headphones record that also works beautifully at low volume on a Sunday morning, rich in detail and never in a rush. For longtime fans of Black Sands and Migration, it is a fine continuation of the story.
