Ghosts of American Psychonauts captures Bonnie "Prince" Billy on stage, eight songs recorded in Los Angeles in 2025 and released as a live album the following year.
Will Oldham cut these performances at the Pico Union Project, a Los Angeles arts space, shortly after the release of The Purple Bird, with a band of natural storytellers around him: Thomas Deakin on clarinet and down-tuned electric guitar, Jacob Duncan on flute and saxophone, Emmett Kelly on bass and Ryder McNair on piano, plus saxophonists Dv DeVincentis and Patrick Shiroishi. Every track carries the subtitle "Live in the City of Ghosts."
The set reaches back across his long career. "London May" features its namesake, the Samhain drummer, behind the kit, while The Purple Bird producer Dave Ferguson adds his voice to "Downstream." "Strange Form of Life" finds new shapes in this looser setting, and the record closes with "I See a Darkness," the title song of his 1999 album and later famously covered by Johnny Cash.
Loose, warm and a little strange, it feels like being in the room for something that will never happen quite the same way twice. For longtime followers of Oldham's restless songbook, it is a rare chance to hear these songs breathe.
