Boney James lets the groove simmer rather than boil on Slow Burn, a 2024 set that showcases the saxophonist's warm tone and unhurried command of contemporary jazz and R&B.
Few players have spent as long refining the late-night side of instrumental soul. Here James keeps the sound sleek but invites a strong cast of collaborators to stir things up, from bass great Marcus Miller and keyboard wizard Cory Henry to rising R&B voice October London and trumpeter Rick Braun. Alongside eight originals, he tips his hat to two heroes, reworking a Herbie Hancock favourite and a Stanley Turrentine classic.
"Arcadia" opens with Miller's elastic bass locking into a gliding sax line, while "Butterfly", the Hancock homage, finds Henry's keys shimmering around the melody. October London brings velvet vocals to "All I Want Is You", a slow-dance moment built for low lights, and "Sugar" closes the record with James and Braun swapping smoky, soulful phrases over Turrentine's famous strut. In between, the instrumentals keep the tempo relaxed and the production polished to a soft gleam.
This is music for long drives and evenings that refuse to end early, played by someone who knows exactly when to hold back. For fans of smooth jazz with real musicianship underneath, it's an easy record to keep on repeat.
