Warm, sprawling and generous, Bon Iver's i,i opens Justin Vernon's world to a whole community of voices and players.

Arriving three years after the fractured electronics of 22, A Million, the fourth Bon Iver album was recorded largely at Vernon's April Base studio in Wisconsin and finished at Sonic Ranch in Texas. The band framed it as the autumn that completes a cycle begun with the wintry isolation of For Emma, Forever Ago, and the songs feel more grounded and communal than anything that came before, with guests including James Blake, Moses Sumney and Aaron Dessner.

Hey, Ma is the emotional anchor, a gently pulsing ballad that ranks among his most affecting songs. Naeem builds from a hush to a gospel-tinged swell of voices, while U (Man Like) brings in Bruce Hornsby on piano and vocals for a stately, hymn-like moment. Jelmore twists and stutters in the album's more experimental corners, a reminder that Vernon never quite lets go of his restless streak.

On vinyl, the layered brass, strings, synths and processed vocals unfold with real depth, and the quieter passages gain a lovely, close-up warmth. It is a rich, rewarding listen that gives back a little more each time, and a fitting close to one of indie music's most fascinating cycles.
