Bolt Thrower's ...For Victory is British death metal at its most disciplined, a 1994 record that marches rather than sprints.
The band's fifth studio album arrived on Earache with their war-obsessed identity fully formed. Produced by Colin Richardson alongside the band and recorded at Sawmill Studios, it trades some of the frantic speed of earlier records for weight, groove and a grim sense of remembrance. The title track even quotes Laurence Binyon's Ode of Remembrance, which says plenty about how seriously they took the subject. It was also the final album with drummer Andrew Whale behind the kit.
After the short opener "War", "Remembrance" rolls in on a mid-paced, tank-tread riff and Karl Willetts' guttural bark. "When Glory Beckons" and "Silent Demise" show the band's gift for melody buried under the crush, with Gavin Ward and Barry Thomson locking their guitars into thick, mournful lines while Jo Bench's bass anchors the low end.
This is the sound of a band that understood heaviness as more than aggression, building songs on hooks that stick long after the last chord fades.
On vinyl, the record's slow-burning heft gets the room it deserves, a fitting monument from one of the most consistent bands British extreme metal has produced.
