Long before hip-hop producers went digging for it, Bob James' One was quietly drawing up the blueprint for smooth jazz, and this gatefold UK import gives the 1974 album a fresh outing.
James had spent years as a working pianist and arranger, with two little-known albums behind him, when he made this first solo record under Creed Taylor's production at CTI. Cut at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in New Jersey, it found him arranging and conducting a big band of strings and brass around crack players including Steve Gadd, Idris Muhammad, Ralph MacDonald and Grover Washington Jr.
He treats the classics with a wink. "Night on Bald Mountain" turns Mussorgsky's nightmare into a funk workout with strings slashing overhead, and "In the Garden" sets Pachelbel's Canon among harmonica and pedal steel. His take on "Feel Like Making Love" glides on electric piano, warm and in no hurry at all.
Then there is "Nautilus", a moody, bass-heavy closer whose drum break and eerie keyboard figure were sampled by Run-DMC, Eric B. & Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest, Ghostface Killah and many more.
Half a century later, One still sounds like the start of a whole new way of thinking about jazz, lush and cinematic and very funky underneath.
