Bob Dylan's The Times They Are A-Changin' is the sound of a 22-year-old songwriter taking aim at an entire era, and it still lands with uncanny force.

Dylan's third album, recorded in 1963 and issued in 1964, was the first made up entirely of his own songs, and it doubled down on the protest material that had made him the voice of a restless generation. Produced by Tom Wilson, it is stark and unadorned, just Dylan with his acoustic guitar and harmonica, delivering lyrics that read like front-page headlines set to melody.

The title track remains one of the great anthems of the civil rights era, a warning to everyone from critics to congressmen that change was already at the door. "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" recounts a real killing and its shamefully light sentence with devastating restraint, while "Only a Pawn in Their Game" examines the murder of Medgar Evers with startling clarity. Between the battle cries, "Boots of Spanish Leather" offers a tender, aching farewell between parted lovers.
