Oh Mercy caught Bob Dylan walking out of a creative fog in 1989, and it still sounds like a late-night conversation in a humid New Orleans room.

After an uneven run through the 1980s, Dylan teamed with producer Daniel Lanois, who set up shop in New Orleans and surrounded the songs with local players and atmosphere to spare. The pairing clicked. Many critics called it his strongest album in years, and Dylan later devoted a full chapter of his memoir, Chronicles: Volume One, to the making of it.

"Everything Is Broken" rides a swampy, rattling groove as Dylan reels off a catalogue of failures with bone-dry humour, while "Ring Them Bells" is a piano-led hymn of real gravity. "Man in the Long Black Coat" drifts in on chirping crickets and murky guitar, a gothic folk tale that feels half remembered and half dreamed.

Lanois wraps everything in reverb and shadow, yet Dylan's voice sits right up front, weathered and wise. "Most of the Time" might be the finest heartbreak song of his later career, a man insisting he's fine while every line gives him away.

For listeners who stop at the 1960s classics, this is the ideal doorway into Dylan's second act, a record that rewards patience and a dimmed room.
