Taped before a small studio audience, MTV Unplugged finds Bob Dylan rearranging his own legend with a grin, presented here across two LPs.

Recorded in New York in late 1994 and released the following year, the set arrived after two albums of traditional folk covers had sent Dylan back to the songs that first shaped him. Rather than a polite run through the obvious hits, he mixed protest songs and deep cuts in with the anthems, backed by a tight, sympathetic band.

Tombstone Blues opens with a rattling, upbeat drive, while Desolation Row unspools at a patient, almost conversational pace, every verse given room. John Brown, a bleak anti-war ballad from his early years, lands with chilling weight, and Dignity gets a brisk, bright reading that makes a strong case for it as one of his finest later songs.

The performances never feel like museum pieces. Dylan plays with phrasing and tempo the way he always has on stage, and his harmonica breaks arrive with real bite, turning familiar material into something that sounds freshly argued over while the band follows every turn.

It's Dylan at his most relaxed and generous, and on vinyl the warmth of the room comes through in every strum and every ripple of applause from that lucky audience.
