Knocked Out Loaded finds Bob Dylan at his most scattered and, on one towering song, his most cinematic, and this reissue is set to bring it back to vinyl.

Released in 1986, the album was pieced together from sessions stretching back to 1984, with Dylan producing and a rotating cast passing through, including Ronnie Wood, Al Kooper, Benmont Tench and members of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers. Critics were rough on it at the time, and it remains one of the stranger corners of his catalogue. That is exactly what makes it fun to revisit.

The centrepiece is Brownsville Girl, an eleven-minute epic co-written with playwright Sam Shepard that rambles through a half-remembered Gregory Peck western, a long drive and a love affair gone sideways, with backing singers egging him on at every turn. Got My Mind Made Up, written with Petty, kicks up a rowdy bar-band racket, and Under Your Spell, a co-write with Carole Bayer Sager, closes the record on a note of unexpected sweetness.

Side one is looser and more playful, opening with a swinging run through Little Junior Parker's You Wanna Ramble.

Knocked Out Loaded rewards the curious: a patchwork record with one of the most ambitious songs Dylan ever put his name to sitting right in the middle of side two.
