Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II gathers 21 songs across two LPs, and several of them first surfaced right here rather than on any studio album.

Released in 1971, during a quiet stretch between studio records, it surveys the years from his early acoustic albums through the electric mid-60s and the country turn of Nashville Skyline. Dylan had a hand in shaping the selection, and he used the set to deliver new material as well as old favourites, which is part of why it has always felt more personal than a standard label round-up.

Watching the River Flow and When I Paint My Masterpiece, both cut with Leon Russell in 1971, bring a loose, rolling barroom swing. Fresh recordings of songs from the Basement Tapes era, including I Shall Be Released, were made with Happy Traum and carry an easy, front-porch intimacy.

Tomorrow Is a Long Time, a tender live recording from 1963, also made its first official appearance on this set, a lovely, unvarnished reminder of the young folk singer at the start of everything.

Heard in one sitting, the collection captures an artist changing shape almost year by year, and it remains one of the most satisfying ways to trace how Dylan moved from the coffeehouse to the country and kept on going.
